Volunteer Appreciation Night- Monday, March 20, 2017
Past, present and interested Volunteers are invited and welcome to join! The VBCD could not do what we do without you and we would like to thank you for your time, dedication and support for all of our programs.
Please join us for drinks and appetizers between 6:00-8:00pm. A short PowerPoint highlighting our Volunteers and Volunteer Programs will begin at 6:30pm.
Decatur Community Roadside Clean Up – Good Friday, April 14, 2017
Help Clean Up Around Our Town! Volunteers can meet us in the Decatur High School parking lot at 2:00pm, split up into groups and help clean up trash in parts of our town and along our beautiful country roadsides. Event is from 2:00pm-4:00pm. Gloves, bags and snacks will be provided by the VBCD and Modern Woodman of Decatur.

Stream Monitoring/Insect Collection- Volunteers are needed to help collect insects in local waterways. All materials and equipment necessary are provided. Volunteers have the opportunity to be a “Collector” and wear waders to go into the water to collect insects with nets, to be a “Runner” that stays bank side and take nets and buckets from the “Collectors” to where they are sorted out by the “Picker”, who picks out any insects that is found in the river/stream and places them into a jar for later identification. Each role is important and volunteers have the option of what they would like to do at the collection site. No prior knowledge or experience is necessary, Team Leaders are there at each site to assist volunteers.
2017 Dates: Sunday, May 7 (9am-1pm) and Sunday, October 1 (9am-1pm). Volunteers meet at the Lawrence River Park, Lawrence on the Paw Paw River.
2017 Dates: The identification/sort and count will be scheduled the following afternoon the day after the Stream Monitoring/Insect Collection, therefore Monday, May 8 and Monday, October 2 (1pm-4pm). Native Plant Sale- Volunteers are needed to help set up tables, tents, organize plants, talk to customers about native grasses and plants (knowledge of species is needed), assist with pre-orders and help with clean up.
2017 Date: Friday, May 19 (9am prior to sale and then 2pm-6pm during sale) in the VBCD parking lot (1035 E. Michigan Ave. Paw Paw). Sign Up to Volunteer!
Household Chemicals Recycling Collections- Volunteers are needed for set up, directing traffic and handing out brochures/surveys to participating residents and clean up (Volunteers will NOT be working with hazardous materials). Usually an hour prior to the event and an hour after the event for set up and clean up.
2017 Dates: Saturday, June 17 (8am-2pm) at Van Buren County Department of Human Services (801 Hazen Street, Paw Paw) AND September 16 (8am-2pm) at South Haven Dept. of Public Works (1199 8th Ave. South Haven). Sign Up to Volunteer!

VBCD Native Plant Garden– A volunteer(s) is needed to tend our native plant garden in front of the district office. An hour or two a week should do the trick! Knowledge of native plants and grasses or an interest in learning native plant identification is required. Please call the District, 269-657-4030 x5, if you are interested.
