You’re Invited: Farming for the Future 2024

Farming for the Future is an annual educational event for local farmers and is a great opportunity to learn from agricultural specialists, educators, researchers, businesses, and other farmers. This year’s event is scheduled for March 13, 2024 at the Van Buren Conference Center from 9:00 AM – 3:30 PM. This year, we will have Dr. Alan Franzluebbers as our keynote speaker. His research focuses on soil ecology and management for development of more sustainable agricultural systems. 2024 Backyard Symposium Webinar Series

The Van Buren Conservation District is excited to announce that we are once again hosting a virtual Backyard Symposium! The series is called “Farming Big & Small” – exploring farm topics from large operations to personal gardens. This is an online speaker series hosted on Zoom in which folks have been invited to talk about a host of topics that connect people with the land and resources to grow and raise our food. New Executive Director

The Van Buren Conservation Board of Directors is pleased to announce the promotion of Emilly Hickmott to Executive Director as of October 1, 2023. Hickmott started with the District in May 2018 as the Recycling Coordinator and began serving as the Deputy Administrator in the spring of 2021. In her time with the district, she has worked to expand recycling education and access, support our strong agricultural community, and equitably address landowner concerns. October 1 Macroinvertebrate Stream Monitoring: Calling Volunteers!

The 10th Macroinvertebrate Stream Monitoring is coming up October 1st! What is the Macroinvertebrate Stream Monitoring? With volunteers and staff, we enter waterways to collect macroinvertebrates (bugs and the like) to monitor our water’s health. It is a fun experience! Who knew wearing waders and getting in nature was so cool? You don’t have to get into the water or have any experience. Just dress for the weather and walking in forested terrain.
