easter hemlock (Tsuga canadensis)

Medium height (60-70′) with conical crown and a drooping leader. Short (0.25-0.75″), soft needles with rounded tip and two white bands beneath. Small (0.5-0.75″), elliptical cones and brown, deeply furrowed bark at maturity. Likes acidic soils in cool valleys and ravines – often in pure stands.
