easter redcedar (Juniperus virginiana)

Short (40-60′), aromatic tree with reddish-brown bark and trunk often buttressed at base, often with irregular crown. Scaly and rough needles on 4-angled twigs. Very small, berry-like cones (0.25-0.5″) produced on female trees, pollen cones produced on separate male trees. Will grow in many soils from dry uplands to flood plains and swamps, also abandoned fields and fence rows.
